The library at the Deutsches Technikmuseum is open to everyone: Anyone who wants to learn more about technical topics and the history of technology—or conduct research—is welcome. Use of the library is free of charge. It has a collection of over 500,000 volumes. The spacious reading room, an open-shelf library with 15,000 books, and a selection of 120 journal titles offer users excellent working conditions. Unfortunately, it is not possible to borrow books to take home. However, books can be requested from the stacks and read in the reading room.

The library serves as a reflection of the exhibitions at the Deutsches Technikmuseum. Here, readers can find further reading on the objects and exhibition themes featured in the museum, as well as on all areas of the history of technology. It also serves as a resource for the research conducted by the staff of the Deutsches Technikmuseum.

The Foundation Was the Collection of the Friends of the Museum

The core of the library’s collection — which opened in 1983 — consisted of technical literature, primarily on the history of railroads, including items from the valuable Metzeltin collection. The Friends of the Deutsches Technikmuseum had assembled this collection over the preceding decades. In addition, part of the library from the former Museum of Marine Science in Berlin was incorporated into the collection. In 1989, the museum acquired the library of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) in Düsseldorf, with a total collection of approximately 130,000 volumes. The collection received another significant addition in 1991 through the donation of the library of the former Chamber of Technology (KDT), the engineering association of the GDR. This collection comprises about 120,000 volumes.
The library continually acquires additional collections and purchases current literature.
